CHILDREN AGAINST WAR
Remembrance of HIROSHIMA DAY “Our Children
against War”
This
event coincides with the commemoration of the 67th year since the
Hiroshima atomic bombing during World War II and as such will focus on the
dangers of nuclear weapon proliferation. Seeing as India is considered a
“nuclear rogue nation” for not adhering to international treaties which forbid
the production of nuclear weapons, our goal is to raise awareness on the
effects of a possible atomic attack and to sensitize the public to this
problem.

March against Child solider / make
Kony Famous, make him visible
In Bangalore Bangalore International Academy with NGO partner SCEAD Foundation India is scheduling a campaign against this
issue where we have a rally against Joseph Kony and Indian child soldiers on 20th
April 2012 Morning 10am to 12.pm
Joseph Kony is the head of
the Lord’s Resistance Army, an Ugandan Guerilla group responsible
for exploiting children as
solders and many other crimes against humanity. LRA initially enjoyed public
support and later turned against its supporters. Children were abducted and
brainwashed into becoming soldiers and slaves, those who resisted or escaped
were beaten to death by their peers. An estimation of 66,000children became
soldiers and two million people have internally been displaced since 1988.
Children living in nearby villages in Northern Uganda came to be known as
“Night Commuters,” walking miles every night to safer locations in hope of
avoiding abduction. Kony’s aim for LRA was
never particularly specific beyond the ouster of Museveniand the establishment
of a new Government based on the Ten Commandments.
The International Criminal
Court (ICC) issued a warrant for Kony’s arrest, made public in October 2005,
which accused him of human rights violations that included some 10,000 murders
and the abduction and enslavement of more than 24,000 children. This led Kony
to make his first peace offering in May 2006 (his first public appearance in 12
years), but negotiations dragged. Ironically, the ICC warrant proved to complicate
the situation, because the prospect of arrest made Kony less likely to come out
of hiding.
He has not been active for
the last few years but "Kony 2012" documentary created by invisible
children has caused a surge in attention. This video has sensationalized the
issue rather than presenting the facts.
Wikileaks says "Invisible Children" spied for Ugandan resume. Many
people ask why no attention has been given to General who has caused mayhem in
same magnitude. Whateverthe reason is, this whole drama has drawn attention
towards treatment of children by society.
We may think that this
problem is only in African countries , Sri-Lanka. In India the problem is limited to child
labor. But in militancy torn states like Jammu Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and
Odisharecruitment of children as rebel or soldier is rife. They are fighting
for rebelas well as
establishment. In India no study has been done about number of child soldiers.
The main reason they take up arms isextreme poverty that they are facing.
According to the
government officials there is no government policy or official guideline about
what to do with child soldiers picked up during raid or encounters. Though they
are returned to their parents, there is no direction for their rehabilitation.
Since not many people know
who Kony is, a worldwide campaign is scheduled on 20thof April 2012 which is called make Kony Famous,
make him visible.
